Letters From The Black Sea

I’ve been sitting with this for a while - the weird contradiction of being a musician and a storyteller in an online world that doesn’t allow for nuance. The algorithm isn’t built for curiosity, it’s built for sameness. So I’m making space elsewhere. These letters are where I’m going to write things down, the way I was raised to do. I come from a family of scientists - people who documented their ideas in full. Who says that musicians can’t do the same in a format outside of music? So I've started writing some blogs in which I’ll be talking about the things that shape my work. Not in bite-sized captions or click-bait reels, but in full, unrushed thoughts. Topics that, if you enjoy my music, you might find interesting. It’s basically a behind-the-scenes, under-the-surface look at how I build the world around my music: The symbols I choose, the stories I reference, the lineage I come from.

If there’s something you want me to cover  (a lyric, a reference, a visual)  feel free to message me at soniaelisheva@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram. If you’re curious, read on.

“But Then I Was Reborn…As A Witch!” - The Love Witch, Modern Femininity & Dark Eyes.

“On first watch, you might think, ‘Well, that’s just a campy film about a witch who kills men.’ But on reflection, you realise Elaine isn’t the villain - she’s the fantasy. The Love Witch is a caricature of male desire: beautiful, submissive, always in control, but only inside a system that’s designed to destroy her.”
